Refacing a headstone involves the process of grinding off and/or re-polishing the surface of the granite. Refacing typically includes re-engraving or enhancing the original text or artwork. Over time, weathering, erosion, and natural wear can cause inscriptions to fade or become obscured, making it difficult for future generations to read or appreciate the memorial. This can help preserve the history and memory of the person or family the headstone represents. Refacing may also involve updating the headstone with additional information, such as adding other names and dates not currently on the monument.
